Erotic-Themed (Shunga) Art Ceramic Figure | Tattoo Artist and Beauty, with Shunga Painting Hidden on the Base

This vintage Japanese ceramic figure group depicts a man and a woman in a scene rich in narrative. The man kneels behind, dressed in a grey-blue kimono, his upper body leaning slightly forward and both hands intent on the woman's back before him. The woman reclines on her side in front, her black hair tied up high, partly draped in painted cloth, her back and body rendered in plain white glaze. The composition carries a strong flavor of Japan's ukiyo world and of the art of the human figure; the figures' movements, gazes and postures are not those of simple static dolls but convey a clear narrative situation. The subject can be read as a tattoo artist tattooing a woman. Floral patterns can be seen on her back, and the distance and gestures between the figures create a subtle, suggestive dramatic tension. What truly sets this piece apart from ordinary Japanese ceramic figures is a shunga-style figure painting hidden on its base. It cannot be seen at all when the piece is displayed normally and is discovered only when the piece is turned over, giving this ceramic sculpture the added collecting appeal of a secret, hidden picture and adult humor in art.

Features

◆ A tattooist and a beauty: a very strong narrative subject

The great strength of this piece is that it is not an ordinary figure of a beautiful woman. The scene has a clear narrative: a male figure appears to be tattooing, or making body art on, the back of a female figure, so the whole ceramic sculpture is like a scene from an ukiyo-e print made three-dimensional. Compared with the common maiko, geisha and court-lady ornaments, a figure group of this kind showing a craftsman at work is rarer and more likely to become the focus of a collection.

◆ A meeting of shunga art and Japanese popular culture

Within traditional Japanese art, shunga has always been a very important branch of ukiyo-e and popular culture. This piece does not place its image openly on the front but keeps it hidden on the base, creating a private interest known only to the owner. That approach fits the quality often found in traditional Japanese objects of this kind: proper on the outside, playful within.

◆ The shunga hidden underneath gives the pleasure of a double viewing

From the front it is a ceramic figure group. Turned over, another figural painting appears on the base.

So it offers two ways of looking at once: figures modelled in the round and a shunga painting in two dimensions. This hidden composition gives the piece plenty to talk about and makes it more interesting to collect than an ordinary nude or figure group in ceramic.

◆ Finely handled lines of the body

The female figure is shown reclining on her side, the lines of the shoulder, back, waist and legs flowing naturally. The body is rendered mainly in an ivory-white to cream glaze, and with the painted fabric in places the plain white skin makes a handsome contrast with the bright colours.

◆ The male figure has the look of a craftsman

The man behind is not merely a supporting figure. His kneeling posture, forward-leaning body and the movement of both hands naturally suggest a tattoo artist, a craftsman, or someone engaged in fine handwork. The pairing of the two figures therefore carries a stronger sense of narrative.

◆ Ornate Kutani-style polychrome painting

The lower part of the female figure and the man's clothing use a wide range of coloured enamels, including:

Purple-red

Pink

White

Green

Orange-red

Black

◆ Floral motifs add richness

Peony and other floral motifs can be seen on the woman's back and garments. The red, pink and green of the flowers contrast sharply with the plain white skin of the figure, so that even with an adult subject the piece retains the delicacy expected of art ceramics.

◆ Natural expressions and poses

The woman's eyes are closed or lowered, while the man concentrates on the work in his hands. Neither wears an exaggerated expression, which makes the scene feel like a moment from daily life and gives the piece a quiet but story-like atmosphere.

◆ The base still shows hand-painted marks and an aged body

The photographs of the base show that the clay body was not given a full gloss glaze; the surface retains a cloth-like or net-like texture together with natural signs of age. The painting on the base also has freely drawn lines, giving the whole piece a more pronounced handmade character.
