Made by hand from hardwood, precisely constructed and composed in appearance. The timber has fine grain and is thick and durable, showing the insistence of Japanese craftsmen on detail in woodwork; the proportions are balanced and the lines crisp.
Metal details rich in symbolism
The copper corner guards and handle have oxidised with age into a soft bronze sheen. The top and corners are pierced with the inome (boar's eye) motif, a sign of warding off misfortune and inviting good fortune, while the drawer knobs take the chrysanthemum form, suggesting integrity and long life — both auspicious motifs common on Shōwa stationery furniture.
A strong wabi-sabi character
