Vintage Indian / South Asian | Hand-Carved Solid Wood Elephant | Fully Worked Floral Inlay

This vintage elephant carving from India / South Asia is a hand-carved solid wood piece with a strong ethnic-craft character. The body is dark solid wood, its surface extensively covered with fully worked floral, geometric and decorative inlay; fine patterns can be seen from the back, head and ears down to the legs, making it visually very rich. The elephant stands in a steady pose on sturdy legs, its trunk hanging naturally and its two tusks extending forward, giving the whole a weighty, powerful proportion. Unlike simple plain wood carvings, the true distinction of this piece lies in its all-over decoration. Almost every major area of the body bears leaves and flowers, radiating motifs, lozenge lattices and small floral patterns; the dense detail carries a strong traditional Indian and South Asian folk-art style. The head and back are especially fine, showing large radiating floral motifs surrounded by continuous leaves, flowers and geometric lattices. The inlay is ivory-white / off-white, contrasting clearly with the dark brown wood, so the piece remains easy to read even when viewed from a distance.

Cast-Iron Rooster Ornament with Aged Polychrome Finish, Folk-Craft Ironware (Kodōgu)

A vintage Japanese iron rooster ornament depicting a cockerel standing proudly with head raised. Through its thick metal and three-dimensional casting, the comb, wings, breast and belly, and the long tail feathers sweeping upward are each carefully rendered. What is most appealing about the piece is that it lacks the even, bright surface of modern metal ornaments; instead it shows richly layered tones of deep brown, dark green, blue-green and touches of vermilion. The comb and wattles in particular retain a warm red that contrasts vividly with the sombre dark tones of the body, while the wings and tail show antique greenish hues, giving the whole piece the character of an old object that only comes with the passing of time.

Vintage European | Bronze Figure of a Classical Dancer

This vintage European figure depicts a classical female dancer in a graceful pose. It is made in bronze / bronze alloy and set on a round base of deep reddish-brown solid wood, conveying a strong Greco-Roman Revival style and the air of European salon art. The figure is seated, her body turning slightly, one arm raised high and the other extended to the side, her crossed legs hanging down, so that the whole pose is full of the flowing movement of dance. Her garments fall into many natural folds as the body turns; the drapery at the waist, legs and hem is especially finely handled, giving the static sculpture a clear sense of motion. Her expression is gentle, her head turned slightly to one side, and her eyes and mouth carry the serenity characteristic of classical sculpture. The hair is dressed up with a chignon and partly bound tresses. Overall the piece is very close to the Neoclassical and Oriental dancer subjects common in European art of the late 19th to early 20th century.

A vintage Japanese small wooden chest with two drawers, a compact, square case with upper and lower drawers. Free of excessive ornament, it relies on deep wood tones, raised frame mouldings and old-style metal pulls to convey the plain character typical of old Japanese furniture. The front is especially attractive: both drawers have recessed panel fronts framed in dark wood for depth, with a reddish-brown wood tone in the centre, and weathered curved metal handles that add a touch of antique detail to the sober whole. It measures approximately 20 × 21 × 22 cm, a very versatile piece of tabletop furniture. Unlike large antique Japanese furniture that needs dedicated space, a small chest like this can sit directly on a desk, tea table, entryway cabinet, bedside, display shelf or work table.

Bronze Flower Vase with Twin Beast-Head Handles and Polychrome Floral Brocade Pattern

A vintage Japanese bronze flower vase with a heavy, antique-bronze metal body, decorated over large areas with coloured flowers, scrolling foliage and geometric brocade patterns, giving it a strongly classical East Asian character. The form has a wide mouth, waisted neck, full shoulders, swelling belly and tall foot ring, with a pair of symmetrical beast-head handles on either side, lending the proportions stability and presence. The belly is the most rewarding area to view: several round reserves contain floral designs, with traditional flowers such as peony and chrysanthemum rendered in alternating pink, blue-green, blue, white and red, surrounded by layer upon layer of scrolling foliage, ruyi and geometric bands. Such elaborate decoration means that even without flowers the piece can stand alone as a complete work of display metalwork.

Iron Tree-of-Life Five-Light Candelabrum

A vintage Japanese five-light candelabrum shaped as a tree of life growing upward. From a sturdy central trunk, branches of varying heights extend to left and right, punctuated with leaf-shaped iron pieces, and ultimately support five round candle pans, transforming the living imagery of a plant into a sculptural piece of ironwork. At nearly 50 cm tall, it is not an ordinary small table candlestick and has a distinct presence once displayed. Seen from the front, the central trunk forms a stable vertical axis, while the five candle holders spread out to either side at different heights, creating a balanced outline like a tree canopy. The iron surface lacks the uniform, smooth finish of modern metalware; instead it retains deep black-brown tones, areas of oxidation and natural changes left by time. The outlines of the branches and leaves also have the irregularity peculiar to handmade work, giving the whole piece the rugged, plain and quiet character of a vintage Japanese object (kodōgu).

Blue-and-White Octagonal Covered Jar with Mandarin Ducks and Lion Finial | Lotus Pond Scene, with Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese blue-and-white covered jar is distinguished by its elegant sometsuke (blue-and-white) decoration of mandarin ducks playing on the water and lotus-pond flowers, and by its octagonal form, crowned with a three-dimensional lion finial; from form and painting to finial, it carries a distinct classical Eastern artistic character. The body is octagonal, with full shoulders tapering naturally toward the base, and each facet presents the blue-and-white design from a different viewing angle. The main scene on the front shows a pair of mandarin ducks gliding on the water, surrounded by lotus leaves, flowers, water plants and branches that complete the lotus-pond view. The blue alternates between deep and pale, with both heavier cobalt outlines and soft, ink-wash-like shading. The shoulder is encircled by a band of large lotus-petal / ruyi-style motifs that clearly separates it from the main scene, while the lower part is finished with continuous pendant leaves and geometric patterns, giving the piece a complete decorative rhythm from top to bottom. One of its most striking details is the deep blue lion finial on the lid. The lion adds a sculptural dimension and raises the piece from an ordinary blue-and-white covered jar to a display object with auspicious and protective symbolism.
