Vintage Japanese | Classical Famille-Rose Long-Necked Vase with Hundred Flowers and Butterflies

This vintage Japanese long-necked vase is distinguished by ornate, finely painted famille-rose flowers, butterflies and gilt decoration; its slender, elegant form carries a strong classical East Asian ceramic aesthetic. The white porcelain body is painted around the belly with auspicious motifs of blooming peonies, branches, buds and butterflies, in alternating pink, vermilion, emerald green, yellow, purple and other tones, with touches of gilding. The effect is rich, yet ample white reserve keeps it from becoming overly busy. The neck is long and slender, the shoulders flare naturally, and the belly is a full cylindrical form narrowing to a foot ring below, giving slender yet stable proportions. The shoulder and rim are further encircled by continuous geometric and ruyi patterns and colored decorative bands, giving the piece complete visual layering from mouth to base.

Kutani Ware | Set of Ten Sometsuke Plates with Landscape and Pavilion Design

This set of Japanese Kutani ware sometsuke landscape plates is preserved as a complete set of ten, with a wooden box. Painted in traditional sometsuke (blue-and-white) on a mellow white porcelain body, the plates depict landscapes, pavilions, trees, distant mountains and figures in boats, in a clear, elegant style with a strong Eastern literati feeling. As the photos show, each plate takes a landscape as its theme, but the compositions are not mechanically identical; natural variations can be seen in the trees, houses, mountains, shorelines and blank space. The blue lines vary in depth, layering distant and near views and conveying the quiet charm unique to traditional sometsuke porcelain. The rims are finely outlined in a dark color, focusing the picture. With a diameter of about 24.2 cm, these are large plates of a very practical size, well suited as serving plates for guests, as vessels for Japanese cuisine, or displayed upright on stands as landscape art plates.

Vintage Japanese | Large Kutani Ware Vase with Gilt Figures and Landscape

This large vintage Japanese vase draws on the ornate painted vocabulary typical of Kutani ware, combining gilding, figures, garden landscapes, pine trees and buildings in a richly layered design with a strong traditional Japanese ceramic decorative aesthetic. The form is a full, rounded jar shape with ample shoulders and a slightly inturned rim, giving steady proportions. The front centers on a figural scene showing people in traditional dress, pines, a garden and buildings, set against a broad gold ground that makes the subject all the more splendid. Vintage Japanese | Kyōto Fushimi Clay Doll of a Decorated Horse (Kazari-uma)

This vintage Japanese kazari-uma (decorated horse) clay doll takes a white horse as its main form, dressed in a vivid vermilion caparison with blue edging, with a black mane and saddle fittings with a gilt effect; the colors are highly characteristic of traditional Japanese folk toys. Compared with horse sculptures that aim at realistic proportions, the charm of Fushimi dolls leans toward being “rustic, auspicious and endearing.” The horse's proportions are slightly exaggerated, its outline simple and solid, and its face has a somewhat childlike expression, which gives the piece more of the warmth of handmade folk art. The most eye-catching part is the saddle and tack on its back. The large areas of gold decoration show natural wear from the years, and together with the traditional vermilion, blue and black, the piece has a festive feel while retaining the historical character a vintage piece should have.

Vintage Japanese | Carved Wooden Replica of the Gigaku Mask “Taikofu”

Gigaku is one of Japan's important ancient masked dance-dramas. It was introduced from the continent in the Asuka period and was widely performed at temple ceremonies in the Nara period. The gigaku masks that survive in the Hōryū-ji and Shōsō-in lineages are important artifacts for the study of ancient Japanese mask art; the Hōryū-ji Treasures held by the Tokyo National Museum include the National Treasure “Taikofu” mask. Taikofu represents an elderly man; traditional examples usually show deep wrinkles, a long nose, a smiling mouth and the face of an old man. Official sources also note that some Taikofu masks have holes for inserted hair at the brows, below the nose and on the chin, where long beards may originally have been attached. The features of this piece are very distinctive: a high forehead, extensive deep wrinkles, narrow eye openings, a prominent nose bridge, a slightly upturned smiling mouth and clearly carved facial contours, carrying the foreign-figure quality and dramatic tension characteristic of ancient gigaku masks.

Vintage Japanese | Large Ceramic Tanuki Holding a Sake Bottle

This vintage Japanese ceramic tanuki ornament is a quite typical auspicious object of Japanese folk art. The tanuki has a round, plump form and a genial, endearing expression, with a full belly and wide-open eyes; it holds a large sake bottle in one arm and wears a red decorative knot on its head, full of the atmosphere of Japanese popular culture and of the good-luck charms of shops. In Japanese folk culture, the tanuki (たぬき) is often seen as an auspicious symbol that brings good luck, fortune, wealth and thriving business, which is why tanuki figures are so often seen at the entrances of traditional izakaya, Japanese restaurants, inns and shops. This piece stands about 37 cm high, making it a large ceramic tanuki with a noticeable presence. Whether placed at a shop entrance, beside a counter, in an entryway or in a display cabinet, it easily becomes a focal point.

Vintage European | Italian-Style Deep Ocean-Blue Glazed Twin-Handled Ceramic Vase with Incised Flowers

This European-style ceramic vase takes a rich, deep ocean-blue glaze as its main feature, with large symmetrical handles on either side and three-dimensional incised flowers and leaves at the center of the body, presenting a mature, dignified and artistic classical European feel. This vintage Japanese ceramic vase has a very pronounced European Rococo / classical court style. The body has a mellow ivory-white glaze, with an applied three-dimensional rose, painted green leaves and touches of gilding, together with ornate symmetrical handles, giving the piece a strong decorative-art character. The most eye-catching part, at the center, is a reddish-brown rose modeled in three-dimensional ceramic. The petals open outward layer by layer, their edges outlined in gold, making the flower stand out further in the light; green leaves beside it form a soft, elegant color contrast with the milky-white body. The handles sweep broadly outward in curves combining scrolling foliage, leaves and flowing forms, a very typical classical European decorative vocabulary. Vintage Japanese | Painted Wooden Tengu Mask with Inserted Hair | Wall-Hanging Folk-Art Mask

This vintage Japanese painted wooden mask takes the highly recognizable tengu as its subject. Its form is exaggerated and forceful: thick black brows, wide-open eyes, a heavy nose bridge and an open mouth baring its teeth together create a strong Japanese folk-art feeling. Unlike the common red-faced, long-nosed tengu, this piece is closer in visual vocabulary to karasu-tengu / tengu-type folk-art masks.
