Shōwa-period Gold Ceramic Maneki-neko, Japan

A gold ceramic maneki-neko (まねきねこ) from Japan's Shōwa period. Formed in high-fired ceramic, it is coated all over in gold and decorated with red, green and silver dots; a collar is tied at its chest, and it holds a round coin bearing the image of “fuku” (good fortune). The raised right paw symbolizes beckoning connections / customers and good luck. Plump and rounded in form, with an endearing face, it is a typical Shōwa shop charm for drawing in business. (Structurally complete and stands steadily; the surface shows traces of storage over the years with some paint loss / scuffs, and the edges have mottled oxidation from age — as is usual for a vintage piece.)

Stone Maneki-neko (Beckoning Cat), Japan

A stone maneki-neko is not only decorative but also carries important symbolic meaning. It is believed to bring good luck and to protect homes and shops from evil influences, and is often seen at entrances or in gardens. Purchase notes (heavy item; pickup only). All dimensions are measured by hand and may vary by ±1 cm. Because of differences in screen display, the item may differ somewhat from the photos, for example in colour. A small jewelry cabinet made in Kobe in 1952, crafted in STERLING SILVER. The double-door body is finely engraved with flowers and foliage, and the doors, hinges and clasps show layers of classical metalwork. Over the years the silver has naturally oxidized into varied tones and signs of use, making the delicate engraving stand out more vividly in light and shadow.
