This piece is made with the **cloisonné enamel (Cloisonné)** technique:
Fine copper wires are laid by hand to outline the design, forming flowing flowers and cloud scrolls.
Several layers of glass glaze are fired on, and the temperature must be controlled precisely at each firing so that the colours stay even and translucent.
After fine grinding and polishing, the enamel surface has a soft, jade-like sheen with great depth.
The process is extremely time-consuming and labour-intensive; even a small piece often passes through dozens of stages before it is finished.

In East Asian culture the horse stands for strength, drive and success; in Japan the phrase batō seikō (success the moment the horse arrives) also puns on umaku iku, meaning that things go well.
