The most captivating quality of this strongly Spanish-style three-leg chair is that it abandons the squared, regular structure of ordinary furniture. Instead, a long, narrow tall backboard extends downward, joined by a horizontal seat board and three legs, creating an outline that feels remarkably primitive and powerful. The leather surface displays a rich array of motifs, including figures resembling knights, castle architecture, heraldic shields, floral and foliate patterns, and geometric borders, with embossing of varying depths producing a three-dimensional effect. The knight/figure image at the center of the tall back, combined with the Gothic-like trefoil openwork above it, gives the whole chair a strong medieval European feel. Openwork decoration also appears on both sides of the seat, so even if it is never actually used for sitting, placed on its own in a room it is a piece of furniture with tremendous presence.
