Japanese Vintage Hand-Carved Wooden Owl on Natural Root Base

Hand-Carved Natural Wood Owl | Three-Dimensional Ornament on a Tree-Root Wood Base

Japanese folk craft (mingei) values natural materials and the plain beauty revealed by handwork. Wood carvings pay attention not only to form but also to the grain, color, and sense of life in the wood itself. This carved owl perfectly displays such characteristics. The owl sits upright on a base shaped from a natural tree root, its body round and full, its eyes wide open, its expression carrying a measure of calm along with a touch of charm. Using knife cuts of varying depth, the carver renders the ring of feathers around the head, the fine feather patterns on the breast, and the layered, overlapping structure of the wings, giving the otherwise static wood a rich three-dimensional quality. The base retains the undulations, knots, holes, and irregular contours of the natural tree root, forming a visual contrast with the delicate carving of the owl.

Japanese Vintage TSUBOGEN CRAFT Handmade Wooden Duck Bookends

Japanese Vintage | TSUBOGEN CRAFT Hand-Carved Wooden Double-Duck Bookends

In Japanese traditional woodcraft and household goods, animal forms have long been a much-loved subject. Ducks, waterfowl, and other creatures of nature in particular are often rendered through simplified carved lines and the natural texture of the wood, producing a gentle and approachable artistic style. This pair of vintage Japanese carved wooden duck bookends shows exactly this design charm of bringing natural subjects into everyday objects. The piece consists of two separate wooden bookends, each with a carved duck. The duck's body is rounded and full, the head slightly raised, and the bill extending outward. The duck's body and the base form a stable visual structure, and together with the upright wooden panel the piece serves both as sculpture and as a book support. The two ducks face left and right respectively, creating a sense of answering symmetry when placed as a pair; even without books, they work as a standalone set of wooden decorative objects. (There is a small chip near the foot on one of them.)

Vintage Japanese | Carved Wooden Replica of the Gigaku Mask “Taikofu”

Gigaku is one of Japan's important ancient masked dance-dramas. It was introduced from the continent in the Asuka period and was widely performed at temple ceremonies in the Nara period. The gigaku masks that survive in the Hōryū-ji and Shōsō-in lineages are important artifacts for the study of ancient Japanese mask art; the Hōryū-ji Treasures held by the Tokyo National Museum include the National Treasure “Taikofu” mask. Taikofu represents an elderly man; traditional examples usually show deep wrinkles, a long nose, a smiling mouth and the face of an old man. Official sources also note that some Taikofu masks have holes for inserted hair at the brows, below the nose and on the chin, where long beards may originally have been attached. The features of this piece are very distinctive: a high forehead, extensive deep wrinkles, narrow eye openings, a prominent nose bridge, a slightly upturned smiling mouth and clearly carved facial contours, carrying the foreign-figure quality and dramatic tension characteristic of ancient gigaku masks.

Ittōbori Camphor Wood Carving of a Figure Embracing a Sea Bream

This vintage Japanese wood carving, in traditional folk-art style, depicts a figure clasping a large sea bream. Using the natural warm brown of the wood, the carver shaped the facial features, clothing, posture and the outline of the fish directly with simple, forceful cuts. There is no elaborate painting, which instead brings out the grain of the wood and the rustic beauty peculiar to ittōbori carving. The figure holds a strikingly large sea bream in both arms, body leaning slightly forward, forming a compact, stable triangular composition with the fish. The face is simplified into geometric planes, the eyes gently closed and the expression calm; the headwear, clothing and body are likewise finished with broad planar cuts, creating a very distinctive Japanese folk-carving style.

Carved Solid Wood Crouching Tiger, Folk-Craft Wood Sculpture

This vintage Japanese carving in solid wood depicts a tiger crouched in a coiled, seated pose. The composition is low and horizontal; the tiger's body is solid and rounded, its forequarters raised and hind legs tucked at its side, creating a steady, powerful posture. Unlike tiger carvings that stress bared fangs and fierce leaping, this tiger conveys poised readiness and quiet authority. The head is slightly raised, the eyes wide open and the mouth turned slightly upward, preserving the tiger's majesty while bringing in the humor and rustic simplicity common in Japanese folk wood carving. The head is the most distinctive part of the piece. The forehead, ears, brow ridges, bridge of the nose, whisker lines and mouth are all rendered with clear knife marks, and the eyes are shaped as round protrusions, giving the expression a slightly exaggerated, mysterious and protective quality.

Large Hand-Carved Solid Wood Ox with Lowered Head

A vintage Japanese carved solid wood ox, depicting an ox walking forward with its head lowered. The large, horizontal composition gives the animal a solid body and sturdy legs, its head hanging naturally, in a quiet, steady yet powerful pose. Unlike works that emphasise a raised head, a charging run or the spirit of the bullfight, this carving is closer to the simple sense of everyday life often found in Japanese mingei (folk craft). With lowered head, the ox seems to be ploughing, foraging or moving slowly ahead; the piece is understated, carrying instead a symbolism of diligence, endurance and steady progress.
