European Antique | Opera Glasses with Figural Painting・Mother-of-Pearl Style Decoration
Opera glasses (theater binoculars) are small binoculars developed specifically for watching performances in theaters, opera houses and concert halls. Compared with ordinary outdoor binoculars, they place greater emphasis on lightness, elegance and decorative quality, so many examples incorporate metal ornamentation, enamel painting and mother-of-pearl into the body, and they gradually became a highly representative personal accessory in European social and theater culture. This piece uses a very refined gold-toned metal frame, with figural painting decorating the outer side of each barrel. The figures wear classical dress, rendered in soft tones of pink, blue, yellow and brown, giving the scene the air of European classical painting and Romanticism. Along the upper edge of both barrels and at the central focusing section, a milky-white decorative material with fine texture can be seen, set off against the gold body and lending the whole piece a jewel-like refinement. This is not the function-driven design of modern binoculars; it is more like an aesthetically minded personal object that people of the past would carry with them when entering the theater.
