Ceramic Tiger Figure by Shirō, Japan

'Tiger Figure by Shirō' is made using traditional Japanese ceramic techniques and captures the tiger's commanding presence. The roaring expression, bared fangs and finely detailed fur all show highly precise sculpting, making the tiger lifelike and full of tension and strength. In Japanese culture and feng shui, the tiger symbolises strength, courage, wealth and protection, and is regarded as an auspicious beast that wards off evil and brings the energy of success. A classic Japanese Daruma tumbler doll (だるま), made entirely by hand in the traditional hariko (張り子, papier-mâché) technique, with a strong folk-art character. It is mainly bright red, symbolizing good luck, protection from evil and blessings. The facial features are deeply expressive, with bold brows and beard, showing firm will and an indomitable spirit. The character “福” (fortune) is written in gold lacquer on the front, and the eyes have not yet been filled in, so that, following tradition, one eye can be painted in when making a wish and the second when the wish comes true — adding a sense of interaction and a ritual of blessing.

Shōwa-period Ittōbori Carved Wood Daruma Figure, Japan

A handmade wooden Daruma figure from Japan's Shōwa period, carved using the traditional Japanese ittōbori (single-knife carving) technique. Made from natural wood, it keeps the warm grain and aged colour of the wood itself; the craftsman's skilled knife-work renders Daruma's piercing eyes, his resolute and composed expression, and forceful facial features. Daruma derives from Bodhidharma, founder of Zen Buddhism, and in Japanese culture is regarded as a symbol of perseverance, determination, success and the fulfilment of wishes. Since the Edo period, Daruma has become one of the most representative good-luck charms in Japanese folk culture, widely associated with wishes for prosperous business, passing exams, career success and achieving life goals.
