A pair of antique European blacksmith bookends with a strong industrial character. On each bookend stands a blacksmith with a powerful upper body, wearing a work apron, a helmet on his head and heavy work boots on his feet, beside a solid anvil and wooden block. The figures' musculature is clearly defined and their posture leans slightly forward, as if they had just paused mid-stroke and were about to strike the glowing iron again — full of strength. The figures are cast in dark metal, the surface carrying a calm sheen of age-related oxidation that contrasts with the naturally veined marble bases below. The set is both sculptural and practical: from the side they are three-dimensional statues, and from the front they line up with the books into a neat row — a functional vintage piece well suited to a study, office or studio.
This “Red-Haired Child” figure from the mid-Shōwa period in Japan is cast in bronze and then hand-painted with coloured lacquer. It is not especially large, yet has a very marked presence. The child sits cross-legged on the ground, body leaning slightly forward, hands folded on the knees, as if quietly listening to someone speak. The facial lines are round and soft, the gaze calm, and a faint hint of a smile plays at the corners of the mouth; the overall expression feels gentle, serene and slightly childlike. Most eye-catching is the long, vivid red hair falling from the crown to the shoulders and back; the strands are rendered with incised lines layered with coloured lacquer, showing fine, three-dimensional ridges one after another. A small jewelry cabinet made in Kobe in 1952, crafted in STERLING SILVER. The double-door body is finely engraved with flowers and foliage, and the doors, hinges and clasps show layers of classical metalwork. Over the years the silver has naturally oxidized into varied tones and signs of use, making the delicate engraving stand out more vividly in light and shadow.
