Satsuma-Style Covered Vessel with Twin Handles, Gilt Bamboo Grove and Cranes Design — Antique Ceramic Display Piece
The main scene here is composed of a bamboo grove, a flock of cranes, flowing water and flowering plants; an ivory-toned glazed ground is paired with gilt twin handles and minutely detailed painting, and although the piece is not large it has a very refined, elegant air of Japanese antique art. The body forms a low, full, rounded silhouette, with gilt handles at either side and a matching cover above. The finial is not the usual round knob but a small curved lifting knob, which makes the overall proportion look all the more delicate. The body is glazed in a warm ivory white to cream ground, with the main scene depicting a bamboo grove and cranes. Slender bamboo leaves fall from above, while numerous cranes are distributed among the bamboo, plants and water's edge, forming a small landscape-and-bird world with a real sense of depth.
