Japanese Akahada Ware Ceramic Horse

Japanese Akahada Ware|White-Glazed Saddled Horse Ceramic Figure・Ancient-Pottery-Style Horse Ornament・Original Wooden Tomobako

This piece has very much the air of Japanese ancient pottery and tea-room display. Unlike realistic, elaborate horse sculptures, it renders a standing horse fitted with a saddle in a slightly rustic ceramic idiom, covered throughout in a mellow milky white to off-white glaze, with the clay body and a pale brown tone showing naturally in places; the lines are simple and composed. The base bears the two characters "赤膚" (Akahada) together with a circular kiln seal, so the piece can be clearly identified as Akahada ware. Akahada ware is one of Nara's representative traditional ceramics, and this work takes up the horse—a classic subject in Japanese art. The head inclines slightly forward, the ears stand erect, and the mane is expressed with simple incised lines; on the body one can see the saddle, breast strap and decorative circular patterns. It does not strive for highly detailed muscular realism, but precisely for that reason one feels all the more the simplification, rustic quality and quiet stillness particular to Japanese ceramic sculpture.

Flower Vase by Tetsuzan, Japan

This flower vase by Tetsuzan shows the refined craftsmanship of traditional Japanese ceramics, with a slender, elegant form and a smooth, mellow glaze. The body has an ivory-white ground, decorated above with hand-painted flowers, plants and butterflies, while a flowing wave design adds movement, giving the whole a natural, harmonious beauty. The work of the well-known Japanese potter Tetsuzan, it carries on the traditional aesthetics and delicate brushwork of Japanese ceramics, with fluent painting and soft yet layered colours. It is especially well suited to home display, a tea room setting or a collection.

Ceramic Mouse Figure by Shirō, Japan

A Japanese ceramic 'Mouse Figure by Shirō', fired using traditional Japanese pottery techniques, with a distinctive form that shows the craftsman's accomplished handwork. The mouse wears a green-glazed kimono and holds a rolled cloth, in a finely rendered anthropomorphic pose full of narrative and artistic charm. In Japanese culture the mouse symbolises prosperity, wisdom and wealth, and represents the year of the Rat (ne) in the Chinese zodiac, making it suitable as a good-luck ornament or collector's piece. Its glaze flows naturally, conveying the texture and character of hand-fired pottery. Whether displayed at home, in a study or as an accent in a commercial space, it brings a distinctive Japanese atmosphere.
