Handmade Shigaraki Ware Ceramic Incense Burner, Japan

This is a ceramic incense burner in the style of Shigaraki ware, one of Japan's traditional Six Ancient Kilns. Hand-formed and fired, it expresses a strong Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic. The incense burner has a distinctive form: it stands on three feet, and above is a domed, perforated lid through whose many round holes the smoke drifts out naturally, creating a soft and graceful flow. The surface shows natural kiln-transformation colouring, fire marks and traces of running ash glaze, presenting the earthy texture and patina of age that make Shigaraki ware so appealing. Because every firing environment differs, each piece develops its own unique texture and colour variations, giving it high artistic and collecting value. It is not only a practical utensil for incense but also a work of art expressing Japanese ceramic culture and the aesthetics of daily life.

Chinese Antique | Metal Seated Figure in the Water-Moon Guanyin Style

This Chinese antique metal seated Guanyin clearly draws on the artistic vocabulary of the Water-Moon Guanyin / Guanyin at Ease. The figure wears an ornate jeweled crown, a celestial scarf and beaded necklaces. Rather than sitting formally on a lotus throne, the figure is shown in a relaxed pose with one leg raised and the other hanging naturally, the posture of ease often seen in Water-Moon Guanyin images. The face is lowered, the expression composed, the features soft and restrained, creating a contrast of stillness against the movement of the ornate crown and layered drapery. The right arm hangs naturally and the body turns slightly to one side, making the piece not only a religious image but also a work of considerable sculptural artistry.

Cloisonné Enamel on Copper Twin-Handled Incense Burner with Mythical Beast Finial

This vintage Japanese incense burner combines cloisonné enamel on a copper body, bronze-toned metalwork and a lid with a mythical beast finial. Though not large, it is richly layered in decoration, a refined display piece with both classical Eastern character and the appeal of collectible metalwork. The burner has a round body on three feet, with symmetrical scrolled handles on either side whose outward-sweeping lines give the silhouette a dignified air. The most striking part of the body is the central band of cloisonné-style enamel in blue-green tones: blue, teal, white and reddish brown form continuous scrolling foliage, ruyi and geometric designs, making a beautiful contrast of cool and warm against the bronze-colored metal above. The domed lid is decorated with a continuous tortoiseshell pattern and topped by a small mythical beast finial. The crouching beast serves as a practical handle while adding a sculptural layer to this small object.
