A vintage Japanese ceramic figure of a divine general holding a pagoda in one hand and a trident halberd on the other side. It transforms the attributes and guardian-general imagery common to traditional religious figures into a ceramic work full of Japanese folk-craft charm. What catches the eye first is its endearing proportions. Rather than the tall, solemn posture typical of traditional Buddhist statuary, the body is modelled in a full, rounded outline; the head is slightly bowed, and the heavy brows and gaze carry a certain sternness, yet the exaggerated figure and hand modelling create a contrast of dignity tempered by good-natured charm, and of rustic simplicity touched with humour.
