A Japanese Hagi ware chawan with a warm clay body and a natural, soft glaze; fine iron specks and glaze runs are visible on the surface, showing the rustic character particular to Hagi ware. The outer wall is hand-painted with two children flying a kite, the lines light and quick and the colors pale and elegant, vivid and expressive — the kind of everyday subject and playful style often seen in the Shōwa period. It has a small, wide mouth and a shallow body with a thick, stable foot ring, and sits comfortably in the hand; suitable for daily tea drinking, it can also serve as a dessert bowl or a small vessel at a tea gathering.
