Early Sake Jug, Japan
An early Japanese sake jug, a typical Shōwa-period brewery vessel used mainly to store and transport sake. The body is made by traditional ceramic methods, off-white in colour, with a logo and design written and painted by hand in blue, strongly characteristic of Japanese sake culture. Characters on the surface such as 'Sakurayama' (櫻山) and 'Nabe' (鍋) may be the name or brand mark of a brewery of the time, symbolising the craftsmanship of Japanese sake. The jug retains its pouring spout for dispensing sake or other liquids. The handle is a metal loop wrapped in woven rattan, which is attractive and also provides grip and comfort; this design is quite typical of Shōwa-period sake jugs.
