Vintage Japanese | Large Ceramic Tanuki Holding a Sake Bottle

This vintage Japanese ceramic tanuki ornament is a quite typical auspicious object of Japanese folk art. The tanuki has a round, plump form and a genial, endearing expression, with a full belly and wide-open eyes; it holds a large sake bottle in one arm and wears a red decorative knot on its head, full of the atmosphere of Japanese popular culture and of the good-luck charms of shops. In Japanese folk culture, the tanuki (たぬき) is often seen as an auspicious symbol that brings good luck, fortune, wealth and thriving business, which is why tanuki figures are so often seen at the entrances of traditional izakaya, Japanese restaurants, inns and shops. This piece stands about 37 cm high, making it a large ceramic tanuki with a noticeable presence. Whether placed at a shop entrance, beside a counter, in an entryway or in a display cabinet, it easily becomes a focal point.

Vintage European | Italian-Style Deep Ocean-Blue Glazed Twin-Handled Ceramic Vase with Incised Flowers

This European-style ceramic vase takes a rich, deep ocean-blue glaze as its main feature, with large symmetrical handles on either side and three-dimensional incised flowers and leaves at the center of the body, presenting a mature, dignified and artistic classical European feel. The upper part has a flared rim and a slightly narrowed neck that transitions naturally into a full belly; the two handles rise from the shoulders in smooth, symmetrical curves, giving the silhouette the elegant proportions of a classical two-handled vase. The most eye-catching part of the front is the relief-like floral and foliate decoration. This vintage Japanese ceramic vase has a very pronounced European Rococo / classical court style. The body has a mellow ivory-white glaze, with an applied three-dimensional rose, painted green leaves and touches of gilding, together with ornate symmetrical handles, giving the piece a strong decorative-art character. The most eye-catching part, at the center, is a reddish-brown rose modeled in three-dimensional ceramic. The petals open outward layer by layer, their edges outlined in gold, making the flower stand out further in the light; green leaves beside it form a soft, elegant color contrast with the milky-white body. The handles sweep broadly outward in curves combining scrolling foliage, leaves and flowing forms, a very typical classical European decorative vocabulary. Vintage Japanese | Painted Wooden Tengu Mask with Inserted Hair | Wall-Hanging Folk-Art Mask

This vintage Japanese painted wooden mask takes the highly recognizable tengu as its subject. Its form is exaggerated and forceful: thick black brows, wide-open eyes, a heavy nose bridge and an open mouth baring its teeth together create a strong Japanese folk-art feeling. Japanese Carved and Lacquered Wooden Noh Mask

This Japanese carved and lacquered wooden Noh mask depicts a traditional female character, with a soft, dignified and slightly mysterious face. The face is finished in ivory-white to pale cream tones, the brows and eyes outlined with fine black lines, and vermilion added to the eyelids and lips, giving the understated base a subtle layering. The hairline is painted in black, with red cord ties at either side; the proportions are simple yet highly recognizable as traditional Japanese theatrical art. The greatest charm of a Noh mask often lies not in an exaggerated expression but in “one face that shows different emotions as the angle and light change.” (There is a small chip on the back.) Viewed from the front it may seem calm and faintly smiling; seen slightly from below it may show more joy; viewed from above it may appear composed or even tinged with sorrow. This ambiguous, ever-changing expression is one of the most representative artistic features of Japanese Noh masks.

Vintage Japanese | Crab-Shaped Carved Wooden Tray | Ashtray, Large Crab Carving

This vintage Japanese crab-shaped carved wooden tray is a woodcraft piece with a very distinctive form and a strong hand-carved feel. The subject is a crab; the central shell, claws, legs and body outline are all carved directly from the wood. A recess is kept in the center for holding things, so it can be used as an ashtray, for small items, as a tea-setting utensil or as a tabletop ornament, making it not just a wood carving for viewing but also quite practical. The surface retains natural wood tones of alternating dark brown and reddish brown, with clear grain; together with the shadows and sheen created by the carving, the crab looks more three-dimensional. The legs and claws extend outward with strong visual tension, and it readily becomes a focal point on a table.
