Kutani Ware Tea Set, Japan

A traditional Japanese Kutani ware tea set, complete with a teapot and five teacups, full in form and symmetrical in design. The ivory-colored porcelain body has a naturally crackled glaze, showing the aged texture of old ceramics. The painted theme is “pine, bamboo and golden pheasants”, one of the classic Kutani compositions, symbolizing longevity, wealth and the beauty of nature. The colors are clearly layered, painted in red, green, blue, gold and other mineral enamels, with fine brushwork and a realistic style. The teapot has a side handle suited to Japanese brewing habits, the lid fits well and it pours smoothly. Well preserved overall, the cups have no cracks or damage inside or out and the painting is clear, giving the set both practical and collecting value.

Large Ceramic Charger, Signed Chūhō, Japan

A large Japanese ceramic plate signed “忠峰” (Chūhō), generous in form, with a black glaze ground throughout. The main subject is a rooster with outspread wings crowing loudly, filling the plate with energy; the brushwork is delicate and the colors clearly layered. Cloud patterns are painted in an elegant bluish white, evoking an auspicious Eastern atmosphere. The “Chūhō” mark on the base is hand-written in blue glaze rather than printed by transfer, and carries the warmth of an artisan's own hand.

An old large Japanese Arita ware (Arita-yaki) plate, both practical and decorative, fitted with a metal hook for use as a wall decoration. Copper Police Station Sign, Japan

A copper police sign from Japan's Shōwa period, the lettering hand spray-painted, reading “京都府木津警察署 市坂警察官駐在所” (Kyōto Prefecture Kizu Police Station, Ichisaka Police Officer's Residential Post). Judging from the text, the sign most likely belonged to the Ichisaka chūzaisho, a local police unit once located in what is now Kizugawa City in southern Kyōto Prefecture, and served as the official identification sign of that local police post. Made of copper plate, it is solid and heavy in feel, and the natural oxidation and aging of the surface give it a strong period character, presenting a highly authentic historical appearance and an industrial style.
