Old Kutani Iron-Glazed Chawan (Tea Bowl), Japan

A handmade iron-glazed chawan in the 'Ko-Kutani' (Old Kutani) style, with the form and motifs characteristic of early Kutani ware; its firing retains a traditional texture and a sense of history. The coarse stoneware body is covered with a pale off-white ground glaze, and the bowl is painted in vivid vermilion iron pigment with figures, accented with dots of yellow, blue and green enamels, giving a lively, unrestrained composition with strong visual impact. The base shows clear marks of hand throwing and kiln transformation; the body is slightly sandy, and the surface displays natural glaze crackle, typical of an old hand-fired piece. At the centre of the base is an appraisal label of the kind commonly seen in the Japanese resale market; the unglazed foot ring reveals the clay body. The piece is accompanied by a certificate of identification written in ink and its original wooden box, the lid inscribed with the title and signature. Oribe Ware Irregular Chawan (Tea Bowl), Japan (Without Tomobako)

An irregularly shaped matcha bowl in the style of Oribe ware (Oribe-yaki), Japan. The form leans toward free-form modelling, with a gently undulating rim, and carries a strong folk-craft, handmade character. The exterior is glazed over a light-coloured clay body, mainly in clear and green glazes, and the surface shows natural crackle (craquelure), a texture that forms naturally during high-temperature reduction firing. The bowl is decorated with a vine-and-flower motif painted in reddish brown, with fluid brushwork and a lively composition, expressing the 'beauty of asymmetry' and freely sketched naturalness characteristic of Oribe. The green glaze has a strong sheen that contrasts sharply with the texture of the unglazed body, giving the piece visual tension while keeping its rustic simplicity.

Set of Three Old Kutani Ware Painted Bowls, Japan

Porcelain bowls in the Old Kutani style, with very finely executed underglaze painting. The bowls are painted with traditional landscapes and pavilions, the brushwork lively and the colors richly layered, incorporating the classic blue, green, red and yellow of Kutani's five-color palette. The exterior is framed with a continuous geometric border, and the center of the interior is painted with a classical auspicious motif, adding layers of detail and cultural meaning. The base shows a vermilion “九谷” (Kutani) mark, the traditional mark of the Kutani line. The forms are regular and well preserved, the porcelain solid and the painting intact; though old, they are very suitable for both use and appreciation. Kutani Ware Tea Set, Japan

A traditional Japanese Kutani ware tea set, complete with a teapot and five teacups, full in form and symmetrical in design. The ivory-colored porcelain body has a naturally crackled glaze, showing the aged texture of old ceramics. The painted theme is “pine, bamboo and golden pheasants”, one of the classic Kutani compositions, symbolizing longevity, wealth and the beauty of nature. The colors are clearly layered, painted in red, green, blue, gold and other mineral enamels, with fine brushwork and a realistic style. The teapot has a side handle suited to Japanese brewing habits, the lid fits well and it pours smoothly. Well preserved overall, the cups have no cracks or damage inside or out and the painting is clear, giving the set both practical and collecting value.

Large Ceramic Charger, Signed Chūhō, Japan

A large Japanese ceramic plate signed “忠峰” (Chūhō), generous in form, with a black glaze ground throughout. The main subject is a rooster with outspread wings crowing loudly, filling the plate with energy; the brushwork is delicate and the colors clearly layered. Cloud patterns are painted in an elegant bluish white, evoking an auspicious Eastern atmosphere. The “Chūhō” mark on the base is hand-written in blue glaze rather than printed by transfer, and carries the warmth of an artisan's own hand.

Old Sometsuke Arita Ware Large Hanging Charger, Japan

An old large Japanese Arita ware (Arita-yaki) plate, both practical and decorative, fitted with a metal hook for use as a wall decoration. Its style is elegant and elaborate, fully painted with auspicious subjects including lions playing with a ball, phoenixes and peonies — motifs symbolizing wealth, rank and peace. The painting combines: the dual techniques of iro-e (overglaze enamels) + sometsuke (blue painting); a typical Arita nishiki-de composition of multiple panel-style patterns, strongly decorative; and a central peony design, naturally and delicately shaded, with clearly layered flowers and leaves and a strong hand-painted feel.

Hand-Painted Ceramic Cat (Signed)

A handmade, hand-painted ceramic cat with an artisan's touch — an old Japanese-made piece, signed on the base, indicating an individually made rather than mass-produced work. The form is realistic with a touch of childlike playfulness, especially the big round eyes and small mouth, giving it a lively and very comforting expression. The body is painted with traditional patterns in classic blue, brown and gold; the brushwork is naive yet rhythmic, a bow-like ribbon is tied at the neck, and the back bears a hand-painted flying bird, conveying auspicious meaning. Copper Police Station Sign, Japan

A copper police sign from Japan's Shōwa period, the lettering hand spray-painted, reading “京都府木津警察署 市坂警察官駐在所” (Kyōto Prefecture Kizu Police Station, Ichisaka Police Officer's Residential Post). Judging from the text, the sign most likely belonged to the Ichisaka chūzaisho, a local police unit once located in what is now Kizugawa City in southern Kyōto Prefecture, and served as the official identification sign of that local police post. Made of copper plate, it is solid and heavy in feel, and the natural oxidation and aging of the surface give it a strong period character, presenting a highly authentic historical appearance and an industrial style.
