Double-Mouthed Ceramic Art Vase, Japan

This Japanese ceramic art vase is a powerful work in which a modern sculptural sensibility meets traditional craft. Its most captivating features are its unconventional “double-mouth” design and its dynamic contrasting blocks of colour, showing the deep accomplishment of modern Japanese ceramics in pursuing an “aesthetic of irregularity.” It is not just a vase but a three-dimensional artwork capable of defining the character of a space. What is most striking about this vase is how boldly it breaks the traditional constraint that ceramic vessels must be “symmetrical.” The upper half of the body is covered in a rich, lava-like reddish-brown glaze, smooth in texture yet thick with the feel of the hand, contrasting vividly, as solid against void, with the intricate butterfly motif on the lower half. Hokkaidō Carved Wood Bear, Japan

This carved wooden bear from Hokkaidō is one of the warmest classic symbols of Shōwa folk craft. The Hokkaidō carved bear (kibori-guma) originated in Ainu culture and represents reverence for and protection of nature.
