Shōwa-period Standing Wooden Shop Sign, Japan

A standing wooden sign from a Shōwa-period Japanese chemical-fertilizer dealer. In the mid-Shōwa period Japanese agriculture modernized rapidly, and promotional items for kasei hiryō (compound fertilizer) were widely seen. On this sign the characters are carved in intaglio and then filled with gold lacquer, the lettering heavy and showing the feel of hand-cut knife work, together with a vermilion emblem at the top and the words “exclusive dealer / licensed”, reflecting the importance placed on brands and patents at the time. Hanging holes, wear from use, knocks at the edges and corners, some fading and the patina of age are visible — traces of a genuine working sign removed from a home or business. It is complete overall with clear lettering, carrying a strong period feel of Shōwa commercial design and local character.

Shōwa-period Gold-Lacquered Wooden Shop Sign, Japan

A Shōwa-period authorized-dealer sign for a Japanese pharmacy / patent-medicine brand. By the Shōwa period Japan's distribution system was mature, and patent-medicine brands often used a tokuyaku (authorized dealer) system to distinguish their sales channels, with wooden signs like this hung at pharmacy entrances or on arcade pillars. This piece pairs a gold ground with black main characters for a high-contrast effect legible from afar; at the top, a round red radiating flower-shaped emblem resembles the crests of Kyōto-related shrines / Tenjin shrines, echoing the regional indication given by the characters “京都” (Kyōto). The sign retains the original patina of age: natural oxidation of the gold lacquer, wear at the edges and corners, some paint loss and exposed wood fibers — all genuine traces of long outdoor / semi-outdoor use. The structure is sturdy and the lettering clear, giving it dual collecting value in Shōwa commercial design and the history of medicine retailing.

Large Antique Lacquered Wood Tengu Mask, Japan

A traditional Japanese tengu mask, carved in wood with an exaggerated long nose, glaring eyes and clenched teeth, and set with thick implanted eyebrows, whiskers and a long beard, conveying the fierce power of a mountain deity incarnate. Old Japanese Ceramics | Bizen Ware Rabbit Figure

Hand-modeled from Bizen's local coarse, gritty clay, this piece was fired in the traditional unglazed, high-temperature yakishime manner. During firing, wood ash settled naturally while reduction and oxidation alternated, leaving multiple bands of kiln-transformation color and natural ash-glaze marks on the surface — mottled reddish brown, blackish brown and grayish white — showing the dry, mineral feel and calm texture particular to Bizen ware. The rabbit crouches low, its ears laid along its back and its gaze inward; the modeling is rustic yet lively, and the proportions heavy and solid, with a strong wabi-sabi aesthetic.
